Frequently asked questions

What age is Buteyko® suitable for?

It’s appropriate for children and teens who are already showing signs of mouth-breathing, shallow breathing, or irregular jaw development — and for anyone (including adults) who wants to train more efficient breathing habits.

The technique requires guided teaching and daily practice. Improvements may be seen within weeks, but lasting benefits often come from 3–6 months of consistent practice.

No – it’s a complementary technique. Buteyko® supports the breathing and habit side; hardware (appliances) may still be required for alignment or jaw development.

Yes – when taught by qualified instructors and used appropriately. However, it should not replace medical treatment for serious breathing or sleep disorders.

Children often report improved breathing patterns, calmer behaviour, better sleep and reduced mouth-breathing. Some studies show reduced asthma symptoms, though evidence remains limited.
